aka Film of the week: Hamlet puts business

Of Aki Kaurismäki

With Pirkka-Pekka Petelius, Esko Salminen, Kati Outinen

" Hamlet puts business recounts the incredible adventures of a young vivacious temperament as a snail and warm-hearted as a refrigerator . [...] No wonder that Ophelia is going in and sobbing in the bathroom. But do not let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of this art: it is about money, life or death . "Words by Aki Kaurismäki drawn dall'imperdibile dialogue about cinema, life, vodka have made clear what the film is in substance, that is a modern and lucid interpretation of the play's most famous William Shakespeare, filtered through the distorting lens of the grotesque.

The theater of events moves from Denmark in Helsinki, and the famous castle of Elsinore, the central place of the tragedy, is replaced by Finnish industry, which produces plastic ducks. Even the characters that move in the story is treated as straniente: If Shakespeare's Ophelia against Hamlet had a love pure and boundless, Ophelia Kaurismäki is interested only man solely based on economic calculation. Hamlet himself, if you keep in mind the words of the director above, is anything but a young educated and refined intelligence: it is rather a stupid jerk and capricious.

Thus, in many ways while remaining faithful to the original text, the ability to delineate the distinctive features in the depths of the human being in relation to a particular historical period, Kaurismäki it differs clearly in form and style, managing to build a Portrait of a thin and not at all obvious vices (many) and virtues (few) of the "damned" capitalist bourgeoisie that was establishing itself in Finland in the eighties. These, in fact, the fundamental questions raised by the film according to the same author, "who killed the general manager? The shipyards of Hyvinkää will be abandoned in order to obtain a monopoly on global manufacturer of plastic ducks? And where is the cap of the driver? [...] Who will be the winner, who will pay the price of this underground classic drama series B in black and white? Nobody knows. "That the dilemma accompany your vision.

This week you can not miss Hamlet puts business , would be pure folly. You can find the number 599 to the video tape.

Film of the week: The Story Sraight

By David Lynch

With Richard Farnsworth, Harry Dean Stanton, Sissy Spacek

The Straight Story is part of the "narrative strands" of the film by David Lynch, inaugurated by The Elephant Man in 1980 and continued ten years later with Wild at Heart , confirming the fact that the testing of new linguistic forms and strictly personal (or lynchane, as they say) is often accompanied by the need to return to a classical narrative, true to traditional canons of assembly "invisible." If the narrative structure of the previous Lost Highways recalls the paradoxical form of the Mobius strip, as a slew of critics have noted, semiologists and spin doctors, the linearity of the story here is sharp and clear from the outset , as also suggested by the title: it starts from a small town in Iowa and comes to Mount Zion, Wisconsin.

To give a measure of the beauty of the story is enough to remember what happens at the beginning of the movie: Alvin Straight, an old man who was recently diagnosed with a bad hardly curable, gets a call from his brother Lyle has not seen for many years due to a trivial dispute unresolved. Lyle brings bad news, now is not long to live. Alvin wants to see him one last time, but it is no license to drive and his brother lives hundreds of miles away, and be accompanied by someone not really want to know. Taken from a moment of despair casts an eye out the window that 'the garden where to wait for his eyes there is a beautiful half broken-down lawnmower. Yes, just use this scrap as a means of transport to reach Lyle Wisconsin, facing a trip to the maximum speed of 5 mph.

particular should not be overlooked, The Straight Story tells a true story in America in 1994 to seventy-Alvin Straight. The interpretation of Richard Farnsworth, here at his last film appearance, will remain forever among the most memorable and disarming that the movie memories.

Film of the week: The White Ribbon

By Michael Haneke

With Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Tukur, Burghart Klaußner

"As a man of German culture, I think the 1913/1914 is a very fascinating. But The White Ribbon is not "just" a historical film, the fanaticism to which it relates is not "just" the Nazis between 1933 and 1945 . Obviously, if the story of kids in that period are between 10 and 15 years were shall find men and women under Hitler, but at the same time the meaning of my story refers to all forms of fanaticism even later, even the contemporary, from communist-style in the Islamic ...

If the Fanaticism consists in giving immediate answers, which eliminate the reasoning, then we now live in a historical moment in which the domain of television requires us this kind of thinking and behavior. If the cinema wants to keep an art form has to go against this fanaticism television, against the mechanism of instant answers and treat the public more seriously. This is what many saw The White Ribbon have labeled as a penalty.

[...] The White Ribbon is the title of "premium" means that group membership, the community, the adult world, to the institution. Only in this logic, the individual finds its rightful place. I had thought but also to another title, The right hand of God , because the small players, once they have absorbed as absolute ideals apply to the letter, 100%, punishing the same way as those who do not share them or made them so completely their own. That's why I do not consider The White Ribbon a historical film about Germany that was inevitably to Nazism Hitler: a work is against any use of corrupt corrupt ideas. " (Interview Michael Haneke by Alessandra Matelli, is the number 57 of the magazine duelists )

The White Ribbon let's ride Germany in the beginning of the century.

It 's the film that we recommend this week.

Laboratory staging

"... this vast globe itself, yea,
and what it contains will be dissolved, as the scene
hours without substance vanished without a trace
. We are such stuff
of which dreams are made on and our little life is rounded with a sleep
.

W. Shakespeare

"The day I die a gentle breeze
erase our footprints from the sand . When the wind will drop
eternity
who will say that once walked here, at the dawn of time? "

"SETTING UP" is a workshop on the process of staging a show.
A laboratory for advanced actors, for those who have completed a training course at least three years.
A workshop to be held in Daedalus, from February 2011.

NOTES ON LABORATORY

Set up is, in its origin, a word used by sailors.
Set up a ship to have the load balanced. Put in place before leaving.
put on a show is to prepare a ship for a trip.
My experience led me to thinking (and practicing) the work of staging as a process, an intense search path shared between people.
I know that if you work seriously, the journey that leads to a performance of "finished" can be very long, perhaps that is why often the "laboratories of production" leading to reap excellent props that "for lack of time" remain rough, with a high degree of approximation.

This workshop will focus on just one piece of work that often, especially in training, it barely touches.
In the long process of creation, "set up" is the moment when history must find its form. It is time that comprise the language of a show, where every aspect (dramatic structure, choices related to space, the sound environment, objects, acting, etc.) flows into a coherent whole expression. It is the process of working through which are fixed - perhaps forever - the "rules of generations" of the living world that it is a story told on stage.
This will be the heart of the laboratory.

will be a training workshop: a research trip, first of all, if it is possible to find opportunities to learn, clarify or inspire their work.
addition and along with this, the path will arrive at the realization of a theatrical performance.

Why all this is possible within a reasonable time the laboratory will have a base of working materials I have proposed "a priori": a narrative plot basic ideas regarding possible choices of the language, references and "sources" to turn in research. We will have in practice already prepared and fertile land, avoiding long periods apart. Like a game, there will be a context, rules, constraints that allow great freedom of movement. And many questions.

materials that you have derived from the experience gained last season with a group of students of Daedalus, the preparation of the test "With closed eyes" . Despite the incompleteness of the work, a typical study, the raw material still proved to be so full of ideas to convince me (along with - it must be said - to the demands of some students tough) to make it the basis for the lab.

respect to the contents, only two coordinates.
Anyone interested will have the opportunity to speak at length with me the spirit of the work.
"With closed eyes" is the result of tutorial on "The Tempest" Shakespeare , where students have unlimited freedom of movement, the ability to completely move away from a literal interpretation. And so it was in the end. No islands, no kings, no magic.
The crew of a film, lost in the heart of the most inaccessible Kalahari Desert.
food and water for a few days.
around, a wild, live a life unknowable.
The desert is a mirror in which to look. Not always what you see is reassuring.
Kalahari, which "Kgalagadi", the great thirst ...
The Storm is far away, yet I can not help but think of the survivors wandering on the island of Prospero as the ancestors.
So it will be for the lab.
will not work on Storm. The Tempest will be one of its underground sources.
The desert is the Earth, will be the main character of the story. It will be history.

After Scabies Treatment Will Bumps Stil

Film of the week Elephant

Of Gus Van Sant

With John Robinson, Alex Frost, Elias McConnell, Eric Deulen

An ancient Indian legend tells the story of an elephant surrounded by four people sedutegli around blindfolded, held in front of them unaware that there is an animal that big. The first person reaches out towards the elephant and says: "This is a leg!" The person who is on the side makes the same gesture and exclaimed: "This is a tail!" The third person presses for sure: "I am Certainly, this is an ear! "And the last one:" This for me is a trunk! "

The four people tested recognize the animal that have touched with their hands, but none of they can see the elephant. They have recognized a part, but they missed the whole thing is, the set includes all the individual parts.

as suggested by Gus van Sant in an interview a few years ago, we often relate to the complexity of reality in which we are immersed in these terms.

If Elephant , it is obvious that sometimes their parents as they relate to the lives of their children. Do you think you know all the way, do not really know that a small part. And this is not enough. Then when the children are unbelievers come into a school and commit a massacre in their eyes for no reason, as happened at Columbine High School April 20 1999.

Elepahnt is the film that we will recommend this week.

If you have not seen it yet, or if you want to see him and do not have time to download, can be found at number 360 of the video library of Daedalus.
